Alas - "Uusi Vuosi"(LP:Clear)

The 2022 debut album from Alas, a band hailing from the Finnish city of Jyväskylä.

The album cover depicts a gray world, and the colorless, transparent vinyl not only represents winter but also alludes to the COVID-19 era, during which people were inevitably confined.

Titled “Uusi Vuosi” (New Year), this album is imbued with the positive energy of a fresh start and new vitality; even though the backdrop of the times is gray, the sound itself is bright and colorful. It has a Skramz-like feel—not intense hardcore—and the resonance of the vocals in their native language convinces you that this is the sound of a contemporary band.

In other words, you could call it guitar rock, but while they strum clean guitar sounds, the performance itself is screamo. I sometimes wonder if there are elements of old-school Nordic intensity, but when I think back, I realize that very few bands with this kind of sound have emerged from Finland. It feels like a good trend.

灰色の世界を表したジャケット、無色透明なクリア盤、それらは冬を表してはいるが同時に人々が否応無しに閉じ込められたコロナの時代も暗示している。

『Uusi Vuosi』とは新しい年、新しい息吹のポジティブなエネルギーをしたためた作品となっており、時代背景は灰色でもそこにあるサウンドは明るくカラフルなものになっている。激情ハードコアではないSkramzという感じで、母国語で歌われる音の響きも含めて今のバンドの音なのだと確信させてくれる。
つまりはギターロックであるという言い方も出来るかもしれないが、クリーンなギターサウンドをかき鳴らしながらも演奏自体はScreamoであり、古くは北欧激情の要素もあるのかなと思ったりもするけど、思い返してみるとフィンランドからこの手の音のバンドはほとんど登場していないことに気づいたりもする。良い流れな気がする。
