diSSUE - " Vol.3「ブラックメタルの現在地("The Current State of Black Metal”)」" (ZINE)

Another crazy thing has emerged on this planet...

It wasn't just because we happened to sit next to each other at last year's 2025 Bunfuri... but at that event, there were few groups writing about music genres, and even fewer extreme ones. So naturally, I had to check out diSSUE. But seeing the delivered Vol.3 left me stunned.

“Hasn't this thing gotten ridiculously huge?”

I skimmed through the overwhelmingly thicker Vol.3, and it's interesting.
The interviews feel psychologically open, the kind of content you rarely see in commercial magazines = meaning this is precisely the kind of meaningful zine that makes independent publishing worthwhile. And while many magazines devote most of their pages to interviews, this one firmly includes disc reviews. Honestly, if a magazine doesn't publish disc reviews, I don't trust it. Content aside, writing disc reviews comes first. I even think that's where it all begins.

Personally, I listened to a lot of black metal around 2010, but by the time 2020 rolled around, I was only listening to a handful of bands. The main reason was that I was losing my motivation to dig into black metal. For quite some time, I'd grown utterly tired of how much of the black metal emerging in the world overused occult and Norse mythology motifs. And then, the new black metal emerging from the opposite end of the spectrum mostly felt like heavy music labeled “black metal” that lacked the scent of blood—music that didn't really feel like black metal to me.

But reading this has made me want to give contemporary black metal another listen. I find myself mixed in among the writings of these renowned contributors—is that okay? It is, right?

またやばいものが世の中に出てしまったなぁ…

去年2025年の文フリでただ近くの席に偶然なってしまったから…というわけではなく、あのイベントでは音楽のジャンルで書き物をしている集団が少なくて、そしてさらにエクストリームな人たちは更に少なかった。ということで、当然チェックせざるを得ない、diSSUE。しかし納品されたVol.3を見て驚愕してしまった。

「めちゃくちゃデカくなってねえか」

圧倒的にボリュームが増したVol.3を少し読んでみたけど、面白いです。
対談についても、心理的にオープンになっている内容になっていて、商業誌ではなかなか出来ないものになっている=つまり、こうした個人集団で発行する意味のあるZINEである。そして、数々の雑誌がその紙面の多くをインタビューに割く中で、しっかりとディスクレビューを掲載している。やっぱりディスクレビューを書かなければ、僕は信頼しない。内容はさておき、まずはディスクレビューを書くこと。そこが始まりとすら思っています。

個人的にはブラックメタルをたくさん聞いたのは2010年頃、2020年に入るころには聴いているのはほんとに一握りのバンドだけになりました。その主な理由は、ブラックメタルをDIGする理由が自分にとって無くなりかけていたから。随分前から世の中で上がってくるブラックメタルの多くが、オカルトや北欧神話のモチーフを使い回しすぎて飽き飽きしてしまったから。そして、対極から上がってくる新しいブラックメタルも、血の匂いのしない「ブラックメタル」という名の、別にブラックメタルを感じないヘヴィミュージックがほとんどのように感じてしまったから。

でもこれを読んで、いまのブラックメタルももう一度聴き直してみようという気持ちになりました。名だたる参加者達の文字の間に、私も混じってしまっていますが、いいんですかねーー。いいですよね。
