Loma Prieta - "Last" (LP: Baby Blue)

Loma Prieta started their career in 2005, and although they have released many albums and visited Japan several times as Screamo from the West Coast of the U.S., they have gradually evolved their musical style from the emo-violence style of their early days. 2023年発売アルバム、盤カラーはBaby Blueでタイトル印字されたPVCスリーブ付属。

Loma Prietaの存在が2020年代に入ってここまで大きく感じることになるなんて想像してなかった。2005年から活動を始め、US西海岸のScreamoとして作品のリリースを重ね数度に来日もあるけれど、初期のエモバイオレンススタイルから徐々に音楽性を進化させてきたとは言え、やっぱりどこか時代の評価と折り合わないようなイメージ(みんなの評価が爆発的になることがないって状態)があったんだけどこのアルバムはめちゃくちゃ良い。この時代に照準がピッタリとあった過去最高の音になった。

Loma Prieta周辺人脈で言えば、ElleやGhost Spiritといったバンド活動からもフィーバークを受けてのことだろうか、エモバイオレンスの要素だけでなくリフよりもコードワーク主体で、よりメロディも際立つ形になり、楽曲的にもサウンド的にも新しいバンドの姿を見せている。元来のRAWさを保ちつつ、クラシカルな音使いやアンビエント、リバーブの響きの絶妙な妙をコントロールしていく職人芸。ノスタルジックなエモさとポップさを両立した音色は強い生命力が溢れている。マイナーコードのシンコペーション多用して畳みかけていく展開もROSIER味があってドライブ感があり、それがまた音の緊張感ともかなり合う。

2008年の『Last City』から15年目の2023年に『LAST』なのは偶然なのか?
漂白された白と黒の世界=現代。
愛、金、仕事、生、死... 人生、意味なし。
本作もある意味では激情ハードコアの世界観、つまりはセカイ系かもしれない。
