The official description reads: “A new band centered around guitarist Kei Uoz (Gu.), who has led numerous legendary bands and is currently active with FIXED, featuring FLUID’s Naho Kaimoto (Vo/Ba) and Ayumu Nemoto (Dr) of POWER/XALU/UNPRODUCTS—marking a reunion with Uotou for the first time in 10 years since their days in Z.” But I doubt 3LA followers need such an explanation.

Of course, you’ve all listened to the 10-inch record released in 2022, right? When I first heard that record, I wrote: “I haven’t quite caught up with this CONGRATULATIONS yet. My interpretation is that they’re a rock band playing in a shadowy, un-pop realm—like a back alley off the 90s emo highway—that’s hard to pin down. It’s too niche.” That’s right; to be honest, I hadn’t fully grasped them yet.
But! I saw them live for the first time at Dischord Records’ HAMMERED HULLS Japan tour, and I was blown away by the insane sound. It was the power of a live performance—different from a recording—the dynamism of the playing, the precision of the sound, a solid block of sound like a work of art crafted by a skilled artisan. The 2022 release had four tracks, but this one has seven. It even feels like the band’s full potential has finally been revealed.

From a 3LA perspective, I can’t help but view this through the lens of Uotou’s historical perspective, but it’s an aesthetic of “build-up” and “dynamism” that stands in stark contrast to the harshness of FIXED. It’s a maniacal rock with an abnormally low center of gravity, and a deviant pop that feels familiar yet unique. There are moments that remind me of Osrum. The latter half of the album is profound. And the various approaches, different from the four tracks on the previous release, are fascinating!

当然2022年にリリースされた10inchレコードは聴いてますよね？ あのレコードを聴いたときは「私はまだこのCONGRATULATIONSに追いついていない。90年代のEMO街道の裏通りのような、掴みどころのなさ、ポップではない怪しい領域で鳴らされるロックバンド、そんな解釈。マニアック過ぎる。」と書きました。そうです、掴みきれていませんでした正直。
しかし！Dischord RecordsのHAMMERED HULLSの来日公演でライブを初めて見てマジでやばすぎる音に感動しました。それは録音とは違うライブの迫力、演奏のダイナミズム、音の精密さ、確かな職人が作り上げた工芸品のような音の塊。2022年のリリースでは4曲入りでしたが、本作は7曲。バンドの全貌が遂に姿を表した感すらある。

3LA的にはどうしても魚頭史観の文脈で捉えてしまうんですが、ハードなFIXEDとは対極にある"溜め"と"ダイナミズム"の美学みたいなもの。異常に重心の低いマニアックスなロックであり、ありそうでない逸脱したポップ。Osrumを思い出す瞬間もあります。作品後半部が深い。そして、前作4曲とは異なる様々なアプローチが面白いです！
