Slow Worries - "Careful Climb"(LP)

A 2020 album by Slow Worries, a pop-punk/indie rock band from Amsterdam, Netherlands. Only 300 copies were pressed—a very limited run!

While they’ve cited bands like Helium, The Spinanes, and Slant 6, and their sound weaves in punk and experimental elements, placing them within a 90s revival context, their unconventional lineup—vocals, two guitars, and drums—feels surprisingly natural. Yes, there’s a sense of conviction that this is, at its core, a guitar rock band.

While characterized by sweet melodies that evoke a touch of nostalgia, the anger and questions about the current state of affairs that lie at the band’s core intertwine in a dissonant way, creating a unique flavor that sets them apart from the typical dreamy indie rock scene. Personally, I don’t follow the Dutch scene at all, so I can’t speak in detail, but they’re part of the same scene as bands like Howrah, Apneu, and Blue Crime—and from what I’ve heard, Slow Worries is the most pop-oriented of all the related bands.

オランダ、アムステルダムのポップパンク/インディーロック、Slow Worriesによる2020年アルバム。300枚プレスです、少ない!

Helium、The Spinanes、Slant 6といったバンドからの引用を語られているようにパンクやエクスペリメンタル的な要素を織り交ぜつつも90年代リバイバルという文脈にいるのかもしれないが、ボーカル+ギター2人+ドラムという変則的な編成にもある程度納得感がある。そう、これはギターロックのバンドなのだという納得感。

若干のノスタルジーさえ感じる甘いメロディが特徴だが、バンドの根底にある現状への怒りや問いかけが不協和音的に絡み合い、ただ夢見がちなだけのインディーロック勢とは異なる独特の味を醸し出している。個人的にオランダのシーンは全然追っていないので詳しくはわかりませんが、Howrah、Apneu、Blue Crime、といったバンドにも属しており、聞いた限りでは関連したどのバンドよりSlow Worriesがポップです。
