くゆる(kuyuru) - "Lovescape" (CD)

The label “shoegaze” has gained recognition among the general public, and there is an unprecedented boom of shoegaze in Japan and Asia. Do you consider shoegaze as one of the music genres or as one of the revolutions brought about by alternative rock?

Regardless of what you think of shoegaze, the first album by a roaring shoegaze band called “Kuyuuru” from Tokyo, Japan, has been released and is now available for purchase. The reason why I thought “this might be a good band” in the first 3 seconds of the video, without even watching the whole video, was that the drummer was power style, and the sound was not only atmospheric but also physical. In 2023, the same year of this video, SPOILMAN also appeared at their event, and before I knew it, the drummer had become an occasional support for Pale as well. As the label “shoegaze” is being incorporated and softened by Japanese rock, there is an absolute need for a band that recaptures the destructive impulse of alternative rock. Well, I think there are some Japanese rock elements in Kuyuru, but that's about it. When I asked them about the reason, they told me that they had been a triple-guitar band from the beginning, and that they had three guitarists as a result of unplanned member gathering. The sense that they are moving forward is wonderful. Everything may be an initial impulse, but the spirit of starting something with an independent release is also important.
I recommend this album to the 3LA roaring sound club and the post-metal club as well.
