An album released in 2023 by the Osaka-based female-fronted shoegaze Japanese rock band, Aoi Bara.
Honestly, Japanese rock is the genre I understand the least, and that includes Japanese shoegaze. But lately, most Japanese shoegaze bands seem to be drowning in this overwhelmingly sparkly, youthful vibe that makes me go “Ugh!!” and recoil. Their sound, though, has this “shadowy” quality to it, so I think it works.

They're probably a really young band, so their sound and playing still have rough edges. But that roughness might actually capture the vibe of the underground band scene from the 2000s. If they'd done this with a high-fidelity recording, it could have been genuinely boring. But they're doing it with this full-on indie sound – whether intentional or natural – and that's what gives it meaning. The drums, contrasting with the floating yet thunderous guitar, offer a surprising originality – a mysterious discovery. But above all, the lyrics, fully embracing that “Sekai-kei” style that might repel some listeners, actually work surprisingly well. It might even hit some people right in the feels. I'd recommend this to fans of early SUPERCAR, Anigazer, or Mikugazer. 3LA's Japanese rock fans, definitely check this out.

大阪の女性voシューゲイズ邦ロック、青い薔薇というバンドの2023年リリースのアルバム。
正直言って私の一番分かっていないジャンル=邦ロック、そして日本のシューゲイズである。しかしここ最近の和製シューゲイズのほとんどがキラキラ青春系の匂いをこれでもかと発散してくるの「ウッ!!」と拒絶反応が起きてしまうのですが、彼女等の音は"陰"な感じもするのでアリかと思います。

多分めちゃ若いバンドなのでサウンドや演奏面に関してはまだまだ粗いところもあるんだけど、それが逆に00年代アングラだった頃のバンドシーンの雰囲気もあるかもしれない。これ、ハイファイな録音でやってしまったらマジでつまらなくなる可能性があるんだけど、意図的なのか天然なのかインディ感全開の音でやってるから意味がある。浮遊かつ轟音を志向するギターと対照的なドラムの演奏はオリジナリティがあって実は意外、という謎の発見もあるんだけど何よりリスナーによっては拒絶反応ありそうな"セカイ系"全開の歌詞世界が一周回ってかなりアリ、むしろブッ刺さる人もいるかもしれない。初期SUPERCARやアニゲイザーやミクゲイザーを聴いている方にも勧められる。3LA邦ロック部の方は是非チェックしてください。
