GREENMACHiNE - "MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS" (LP: Green Vinyl)

Having burst onto the scene in the early 90s, they are considered legendary bands of Japanese sludge and stoner rock, yet at the core of their sound lies “hardcore.” Sludge, doom, stoner, hardcore, punk, rock—none of the elements that make up their sound are one-dimensional; they are firmly interpreted and blended into an original output.

The fact that their sound continues to be sought after by listeners both domestically and internationally proves that they have established a musical style that only they can produce. Even in their early works, which feature a deafening sludge sound that borders on the pathological, one can glimpse the fragments of what they later dubbed “hardcore rock.” However, this album, ‘MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS,’ is the present and the pinnacle of GREENMACHiNE's “hardcore rock,” and we can confidently declare it as such.

The CD version of this album has already been released by Daymare Recordings, and many listeners are probably familiar with its contents, but there are several noteworthy points about the analog release.

The mastering of the audio source was created as a separate version specifically for analog release, and the record is a heavyweight pressing manufactured domestically, embodying the band's vision of an analog release from the outset.

In addition to the sound, the band has also paid meticulous attention to the overall texture of the work in its analog format. The sleeve and jacket feature Van Nuovo paper, a material capable of expressing rich textures, enhancing the presence of the album jacket.

The sleeve features the Japanese title “狂気の山脈” and the sleeve design evokes the classic LP releases of yesteryear, showcasing the band's playful spirit. The sound is authentic “hardcore rock,” and as the title suggests, it captures the ecstasy of rock music that lies beyond the mountains, expressed through the vinyl format. We encourage listeners to enjoy the flow of both sides of the record.

1995年金沢にて結成、GREENMACHiNEが2019年に15年ぶりの新作アルバムとして完成させた最新作『MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS』を500枚限定プレスで3LAよりカラーヴァイナル、クリアグリーン仕様で2019年5月31日リリース!

　90年代のシーン黎明期を駆け抜け、日本のスラッジ、ストーナーロックの伝説的バンドと言われながらも、その音の核にあるのは「ハードコア」だ。スラッジ、ドゥーム、ストーナー、ハードコア、パンク、ロック、彼らの音を構成するどの要素も一辺倒なものではなく、がっちり解釈されオリジナルなブレンドとなりアウトプットされている。今なお国内外多くのリスナーが彼らの音を求め続けているという事実が、彼らが彼らにしか出せない音楽性を確立しているということを証明している。活動初期作品での病的とまで感じる轟音スラッジサウンドにも後に自称する「ハードコア・ロック」の鱗片を感じることができるが、本作『MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS』はGREENMACHiNEの「ハードコア・ロック」、その現在進行系であり、完成系であることを断言する。

　本作のCD盤は既にDaymare Recordingsよりリリースされており、その内容については既知のリスナーも多いかと思うが、アナログ盤リリースにおいてはいくつか特筆すべき点がある。音源のマスタリングはアナログ用に別途制作された別バージョンで、盤は重量盤で国内プレスされており、制作当初よりアナログリリースを想定していたというバンドの理想を具現化した。そして音だけでなくアナログという仕様でリリースする上で作品全体の質感にもこだわっており、帯とジャケットには豊かな表情を表現可能な紙質ヴァンヌーボを採用、アルバムジャケットの存在感を際立たせている。帯には邦題「狂気の山脈」、帯デザインは往年の名作LPを彷彿とする出来映えになっているのは彼らの遊び心だ。サウンドは正真正銘の「ハードコア・ロック」で、タイトル通り幾つもの山を乗り越え、目指していく先にあるロックの恍惚感をレコードというフォーマットで表現しているので、A面B面の流れも含めて楽しんで欲しい。

　ところで、ジャケットアートワークとタイトル「狂気の山脈」はクトゥルフ神話の始祖、ラブクラフトの傑作小説からインスパイアを得ていると言うが、当時1ヶ月という短期間で書き上げられ歴史的金字塔となったこの小説と、同様の短期間で製作されながらも圧倒的な完成度となった本作はイメージ的にも内容的にも重なって見える。南極の山脈を越え、人類前人未到の領域に進み狂気に辿り着いた小説の物語と同じように、バンドもその山を越えたのだ。理想を徹底的に具現化したGREENMACHiNEの2019年最新作、最高傑作、そしてクラシックとなる『MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS』には全てが詰まっている。
