明日の叙景(asunojokei) - "Think Of You" (CD)

Following their breakthrough album ‘Island’—which harnessed the post-black context pioneered by Deafheaven and boldly embraced Japanese elements to make a singular impact on the scene—comes this 2025 release. Whether it captures the feeling of summer going out or winter staying in, I'm not sure, but it carries a seasonal theme opposite to the previous work, creating a sense of contrast. Musically, it also follows the direction set by ‘Island’.

What's the major difference from the previous work? I think several elements defining a masterpiece coincidentally overlapped on the last album. One was the framework: the challenging stance of doing J-POP within the underground post-black metal format. However, since this album follows that direction, that framework itself is no longer challenging now that the stance has been widely accepted. In other words, they've defined it as their identity, so there's no need to keep changing it. The forbidden blend of metal and J-POP is no longer a curveball; it's become a core element within them.

“If it makes you smile, I'll become J-POP or metal.”
The key point here is “I'll become metal,” not “I'll become black metal.” And the combination of angels and cigarettes (or perhaps “herb”) is, in a sense, mainstream—different from the heretical path of black metal.

Deafheavenが開拓したポストブラック文脈を味方につけて、思い切りジャパニーズ要素に振り切ってシーンを一点突破した彼らの出世作『アイランド』を経て制作された2025年作アルバム。外に出ていく夏、内に籠る冬、という感じなのかはわからないけど、前作とは逆の季節感がテーマにあり、コントラストを感じる。そして音楽性としても『アイランド』の方向性を踏襲している。

前作との大きな違いはなんだろう？ 前作では名作を定義する要素がいくつか偶然にも重なっていたと思う。1つは構図、アンダーグラウンドなポストブラックメタルのフォーマットでJ-POPをやるという挑戦的な姿勢があった。ただし、本作はその方向性を踏襲しているので、その姿勢が広く受け入れられた以上、その構図自体は挑戦的なものではなくなっている。これは言い換えれば、彼らはそれを自分たちのアイデンティティとして定義したので、それをコロコロ変更する必要がない、とも言える。メタルとJ-POPの禁忌的配合は変化球ではなく彼らの中の軸として成立した。

『君が笑ってくれるなら、僕はJ-POPにもメタルにもなる。』
これは "ブラックメタルにもなる" ではなく "メタルにもなる" ってところがポイントだと思う。そして、天使と煙草(もしくはお吸い物）、の組み合わせはある意味で王道であり、異端を走るブラックメタルとは違う。
