GUEVNNA - "Burning Skyline" (CD)

What was 2020 all about? The year that began with the worst possible start to anything is almost over. GUEVNNA's second album, "Burning Skyline," is the perfect soundtrack to this chaotic world. Or, perhaps, "the worst".
　A world where everything keeps changing, and the core of the band remains unchanged... It sounds cliché to say it like that, but after the release of "Heart of Evil" in 2016, guitarist Raizo left the band, and another guitarist, Go, with whom they had toured many times in Japan and abroad, also left in 2019, before the album was produced, and the band underwent major changes in its structure. This album, completed in the midst of the adversity of the band's drastically changing structure, is a work that rather highlights the core of the band GUEVNNA. Naturally, it does not have the massive twin-guitar sound of the first album. Nevertheless, the songs, riffs, and sound are all "GUEVNNA itself," and are filled with a sense of euphoria that greatly surpasses that of the previous album. And the band's attitude of venturing into new territories remains unchanged in this album, not only in their signature festive heavy rock and disco-doom songs, but also in their decadent heavy alterna and funky disco songs with a novel flavor. The lineup has been simplified, with Ryo on bass, Komi on guitar, and Temi on drums, but even as a three-piece, the guitar riffs have increased in intensity and the groove of the band's performance is even more sultry than on the previous album. As with the previous album, there are no lyric cards for the album, but rather artwork written by Anüstes, which corresponds to each song. They are pure images. You can take or leave the message as you like. You are free.
　But that is why I want to say this. There is something you need to get through any situation. Rock 'n' roll tells you that without words. Despite the band's obvious adversity, there are no words on this album to justify the bitterness of such a situation or themselves, no screams of righteous slogans. There is only a diffusion of energy that blows everything out of the water. No matter how the world and the surrounding circumstances change, the sound of GUEVNNA, who continue to play their music unchanged, resonates most comfortably in the body. From their music, you can read the messages that you need to hear. Just like Jimi Hendrix and The Who, GUEVNNA is rock and roll.
