Florist - "Florist" (2LP:deep purple)

Florist, a NYC indie-folk band led by Emily Sprague, releases their 2022 album on Double Double Whammy.

The album is a pair of self-titled works that showcase the band's intention to leave the band once and make it on their own for "Emily Alone" (2019), but still return to Florist, a band they've been with for almost a decade now.

It's not red, it's not blue. The deep purple jacket and two beautiful grape-colored vinyl records. The band rented an old house on the edge of a big hill in the Hudson Valley this time to record this work.

When you drop the needle into the record player, you hear the chirping of crickets, bell bugs, and gentle tones. The sound of the wind softly brushing your cheeks, the sound of the rain drizzling down.... Even the bounty of nature becomes a part of Florist's sound, so beautiful that it makes one shiver.

Florist's music is music for humans, nature, and the earth. Especially in the year 2022, when this record was released, the physical connection between people has been weakened by the pandemic, and many things are not as they used to be. Recently, I have been thinking that music with a band can create a different kind of atmosphere from that of a solo artist such as SSW. I felt the same thing with Big Thief's "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You" and Sadurn's "Radiator" in the same year.

It may seem like a small collective, but there is something incredibly warm and big about love, friendship, and yes, tremendous warmth.

The video for "Spring In Hours," a collection of short movies from 125 collaborators around the world, is also rich with the important themes of this work: seasons, nature, love, and friendship.
