Among Screamo/Skramz releases, how many truly confront Asian identity? Ten, perhaps? But Hawak's album undoubtedly belongs among them.

Though listed as a band from California, USA, the accompanying booklet suggests roots in Vietnam and Asia. The album's title track, ‘nước’, apparently means ‘liquid’ in Tagalog. Some members were in other bands during the 2000s, packing in the melancholy of their thirties.

“Why? Why am I still in a screamo band at 32?” Their self-questioning feels hyper-real. Yet American bands are genuinely young; if they lived in the US, they'd be complete minorities.

Asians who never become BLM-level activists. But perhaps that's precisely why they could confront their own identity? This record is essential listening for us Japanese too.

Screamo/Skramzのリリースの中で、アジア人のアイデンティティと向き合った作品はどれだけあるのだろう。10枚もあるだろうか。しかしHawakのアルバムは確実その中の1枚に数えることができると思う。USカリフォルニアのバンドとされているが、付属するブックレットを読む限り、ルーツはベトナムやアジア圏にあるようで、アルバムタイトル曲『nước』もタガログ語で液体を表わすような言葉らしい。そしてメンバーも2000年代は別バンドをやっていたメンバーもいるようで30代の悲哀も詰まっている。「なぜ?なぜ俺は32歳にもなってScreamoバンドなんかやってるんだ」と自分への問いかけは超リアル、だがアメリカ国内のバンドは本当に若く、彼らがもしUSに暮らしているなら彼らは完全にマイノリティのはずだ。BLMのようなアクションになることもないアジア人。いや、しかしだからこそ彼らは自身のアイデンティティと向き合えたのではないのか?この作品は日本人の我々も必携のレコードだと思います。
