On Hold, the 2018 self-released debut from Bristol, England singer-songwriter Fenne Lily, is reissued in analog by Dead Oceans in 2022.

The melancholy resonance of her voice and the simplicity of her guitar sound are strongly memorable, even though they are not flashy. Some of the songs on this album were written by Fenne when she was 15 or 16 years old. Is it the innocent and naked lyrics, or...?

Or is it the pastoral melancholy similar to that of his fellow UK indie-folk band, Daughter? The texture seems to reach deep into the heart of the matter. The album as a whole is full of sad ballads that remind me of grayish clouds, but there are some songs with hooks that remind me of sunny moments, and I can feel the ups and downs of the emotional ups and downs.

An interesting twist is that the first track, "Car Park," can be heard again as an acoustic version, "Car Park (Overflow)," on the last track of the record.

It is also nice to see that there is still quite a lot of session footage from around 2018. This is one of the points that make me feel that this is an artist who values a live performance. I felt again that it is not meaningless to reissue a self-released work on his current label, and that the music will not fade away no matter how many years have passed.
