Screamo/Skramz in the 2000's: the spirit of “hidden characters,” social hiding, and the purity of belief in music.
In 2003, of course, social networking services did not yet exist, and the Internet was not yet well developed. Raein's style, which is more focused on the individual and less on US-style emo violence and more on the blues, has many similarities to the Otaku Skramz style of music that emerged in the 2010s, Whether it is coincidence or inevitability, the underlying spirituality is also similar. However, they have expressed it more poetically and with more drama. That is why this album is expressed through the contrast between the social and the personal, and the sound of the album is composed of stillness and movement, order and chaos, which I feel is inevitable.
The structure of the album is divided into two parts. Parts #1 to #4 are about society. The story of a system that seems peaceful but repeats itself is the society they represent, if we interpret the title “From 3 to 1 in 2 and 4” as repeating this #1 to #4. But they deviate. From #5 onward, they move on to their personal stories. From this point on, the “I” in the lyrics becomes stronger.
The lyrics are not political, and there is no insistence. The music expresses that music was more than music to them. It was music that was in tune with the emotions of those who couldn't relate to the hit charts and indie rock of the 2000s, those who were hiding in society. We definitely understood the meaning of this music without translating the lyrics. There was something here that resonated with the people who were listening to Screamo, which was probably called “Gekijou” in Japan during that time in the 2000s. So, the evaluation of this work will vary greatly depending on the background of the individual listener.
The last verse, “If I had not fallen in love with rock ‘n’ roll, I would have remained healthy,” is almost self-deprecating, but the words are a warm irony exchanged between people who have been saved by rock 'n' roll.
