Cerce - "Discography 2011 - 2013" (CD+ZINE: Ltd150)

The compilation album by Boston's Emo-Violence band Cerce, originally released on cassette in 2017, has been reissued on CD.

In addition to all six tracks from the six works released between 2011 and 2013, the compilation also includes unreleased tracks as bonus tracks. While the band is often described as a “female-fronted” Screamo/Skramz group, their songs, which blend Power Violence and raw emotion with crossover elements, are highly stimulating. Considering the content, I even feel that they are currently underrated.

The phrase “You'll never be a man and you'll never grow strong” clearly places the band within a feminist context, but the theme of where to channel that anger also emerges, suggesting it's more than just a vent for frustration.

Perhaps it shares the same ironic passion as their Massachusetts predecessors, Orchid. The questions about the curse of being unable to escape one's own body, the pain of loss, and what heals the heart are clearly relevant to the present day in 2021.

2011-2013年という短い期間のうちに発表された全6作品すべての楽曲に加えて未発表曲もボーナストラックとして収録、「Female Fronted」なScreamo/Skramzとして語られることが多いバンドですが、パワーバイオレンス、激情に主軸を置きながらもクロスオーバーを重ねていく楽曲の数々は刺激的で、その内容を思うと現状の彼女らは過小評価されているとすら思います。「You'll never be a man and you'll never grow strong」のフレーズをはじめ、フェミニズムの文脈であることは明白なのですが、その怒りをどこに繋げていけるのかというテーマも見えていて、単なる怒りのはけ口というだけではなさそうです。同じマサチューセッツ州の先人、Orchidと共通する皮肉のある激情とでも言いましょうか。そして自身の肉体から逃れられない呪い、喪失の痛み、何が心を癒すのかという内面についての問いかけは明らかに2021年現代に通じるものがあります。
