Deafheaven - “Sunbather: 10th Anniversary” (2xLP)

Deafheaven's groundbreaking second album, the post-black x shoegaze masterpiece that changed everything. Remixed and remastered for its 10th anniversary in 2024, the soundscape has undergone significant changes. While the “post-black” style they pioneered a decade ago became established and spawned many followers, reconstructing it from today's perspective should offer a re-presentation of values relevant only now. Compared to its predecessor, the black metal elements feel even more diluted. While blast beats remain present, this album shifts its focus more towards shoegaze and post-rock. Packed with roaring vocals and superb melodies, the guitar work is brimming with stylish sensibility and is truly magnificent. The rave reviews from Pitchfork and others are certainly not overrated. Looking back at the scene at the time, it was an adventurous work.

Deafheaven's achievement is genuinely impressive: they took the core musical essence of black metal—which spread from Scandinavia across Europe and then across the ocean to the Americas—and fused it with ideas from post-rock, emo, shoegaze, and more, presenting it as a work of this caliber. They stand completely alone. And whether they saw this potential or not, Deathwish's foresight in signing them is remarkable.

何もかもを変えたポストブラックxシューゲイズの大名盤、Deafheavenの2ndアルバム。2024年で10周年記念ということでリミックス&リマスターされた音像はかなりの変化がある。10年前に彼らが打ち立てた「ポストブラック」のスタイルは確立され多くのフォロワーを生み出したが、今現在の視点から再構築するということは今だからこその価値観の再提示があるはず。その変化を楽しむ音源かもしれない。

前作と比較してもブラック要素はさらに薄れた感じでブラストビートは健在ですがよりシューゲイザー、ポストロック方面に重心を置いていった本作。咆哮と秀逸なメロディを詰め込みまくったお洒落感覚満載のギターセンスが本当に素晴らしくピッチフォークを始めとする各レビューが大絶賛してるのも過大評価ではないでしょう。当時のシーンを振り返ってみても冒険心に溢れた作品であったと言える。

北欧からヨーロッパに広がり、海を渡ってアメリカ大陸に辿り着いたブラックメタルの音楽性だけの部分を拾い上げポストロック、エモ、シューゲイザーなどなど様々なアイデアを纏め上げてここまでのクオリティの作品として提示してみせたDeafheavenという存在は素直にすごいと思います。完全に孤高の存在。そしてこの可能性を見抜いてか否か契約をとったDeathwishの先見性。
