Hexis - "Tando Ashanti" (CD)

Hexis, displaying a mysterious vitality, embarked on a seemingly unplanned long tour from Denmark to China, Taiwan, Nepal, Mongolia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and beyond—mostly self-booked. This album was released prior to their second Japan tour in 2017, following their first in 2014. Their bizarre behavior patterns are entirely different from other Western bands, likely a manifestation of Philip's craziness. Yet, the fact their recordings are so tightly cohesive is nothing short of miraculous. Compared to the relentlessly aggressive previous work, the doomier parts here are simply stripped down, revealing a musical side that makes you listen intently even to the silent gaps. It feels like mastering the art of restraint has only amplified the ferocity when they push forward.

デンマークから中国、台湾、ネパール、モンゴル、インドネシア、マレーシア、タイなどへの無計画とも言えるロングツアーを実行、しかもそのほとんどが自力ブッキングという謎の生命力を発揮するHexis。本作は最初のジャパンツアーが行われた2014年の以来、2017年の2度目の来日前にリリースされたアルバム。 彼らの異様な行動パターンはその他の欧米バンドとはまったく異なるのだが、それはフィリップのクレイジーさの現れだろう。しかし音源のほうはしっかりとまとまっているのは奇跡だ。ひたすらに攻撃的だった前作よりもさらにドゥーミーなパートはシンプルに削ぎ落され、音を発しない空白部分までもしっかり聴かせる音楽的な一面を感じさせる。「引き」の表現を手にしたことで「押し」た時の攻撃性がより一層強まったという印象だ。
