soccer. + Sonic Grandmother - "Split" (12inch)

A vinyl release of the 2022 split CD by ungulates, featuring four tracks from Tokyo-based EMO band soccer. and Ibaraki-based INDIE ROCK band Onso Babaa!

The history of sports-named emo bands runs deep, and while there are many different groups out there, if we assume that “Soccer.” is a play on “American Football,” you can sense a vibe that resonates with the emo revival movement of the 2000s (bands like Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing). It has a distinctly American sound. Looking back from 2026, Soccer.’s sound has gradually evolved and no longer sounds quite like it did back then. Back then, it had that classic blue emo revival vibe.

On the other hand, with “Sonic Grandmother,” you might wonder if the band name is just a joke, but since their English name is “Sonic Grandmother,” it’s actually kind of cool. They also have that revival vibe, but with Japanese lyrics and a sense of wabi-sabi. It has a J-rock feel. There’s a secret code that resonates with the younger generation, and I think it really connects with those who feel it.

スポーツ名EMOバンドの歴史は奥が深く、様々なバンドが存在しますがAmerican Footballに対応する形でのSoccer.である、と仮定すると2000年代以降のエモリバイバルムーブメント(Algernon CadwalladerやSnowing等)に呼応するバイブスを感じることが出来ると思う。US感のある音。2026年現在視点から見るとsoccerは音が少しずつ変わっていって、この当時のような感じではない。この時は青いエモリバって感じだ。

一方の音速ばばあはバンド名こそふざけてるのか?という気持ちになるが、英語名はSonic Grandmotherなのでちょっとかっこいい。彼らもリバリバイバル感があるが、歌詞が日本語なのと、侘び寂び感もある。Jロック感。若い世代の中に通じる暗号があるし、それに共鳴する人には伝わるんだろうなと思います。
